2024, stoneware, eggshells, latex, steel
Installation shots from Downtime, Spread too Thin
Solo exhibition at SANATORIUM,
Istanbul, TR, December 2024-February 2025
Photos by Zeynep Fırat.
The installation features the eggshells the artist has collected from her kitchen and the close community over the course of a year and a half. Calcium carbonate, the primary component of sedimentary rocks such as sandstone, limestone, and argillite, makes up ninety percent of an eggshell. While rocks take thousands or millions of years to form, an eggshell is created in approximately 20-24 hours within a hen’s body. After being fired in a ceramic kiln, these eggshells travel through time with heat and become petrified. Placed on test tiles, they are arranged side by side on a steel structure. The installation also engages the viewer. Through the vibrations caused by their footsteps, the ceramic pieces tingle as they touch each other, and the rock-like formations within the glaze crumble and fall off.
